Charles II Oak Chest of Drawers

This piece has been fully restored in West Sussex, sympathetically and by hand, the oak cleaned and revived using period correct materials and the structure brought back to sound, everyday use without stripping away a single year of its history. The brass drop handles were added along the way, as they so often are on chests of this age, since the original brasses were frequently sold or melted down in times of conflict, and they have settled into the piece as though they always belonged.

Three and a half centuries have given it a depth of colour and patina that only age can bring, the surface carrying the soft knocks, marks, and worn edges of a long life, all of it shifting with the light and rewarding a second look. For all that age it remains genuinely robust and entirely usable, every drawer running true, and the two-part construction means it comes apart to move and place with ease. A rare early survivor, and the kind of piece a room is built around.
