Our Approach To Design

We like to think about design differently. To us, great design begins with the materials and craftsmanship.

Our true appreciation for the naturally occurring patterns in wood grain, marble, ceramics, and any other resources we use, combined with the skill and passion of the artisans creating each piece, brings us halfway to a beautiful product that is inherently unique due to the natural differences in these textures and handmade patterns.

We like to draw inspiration from traditional furniture design, seamlessly integrating it with modern lines and trends. This approach allows us to create distinctive pieces with captivating designs and a lot of character that fit effortlessly into both traditional and modern interiors.

Our Approach To Restoration

The essence of every restoration begins with sourcing.

Our experienced team follows a rigorous process to ensure that each piece we select brings something special to the table.

The initial step in every restoration we undertake focuses on structural integrity. Many of our pieces are completely disassembled and rebuilt by skilled restorers who reinforce any weaknesses to extend the piece's longevity. This may involve replacing thin veneers with thick, solid timber boards or even breaking down the piece to replace weaker elements with more durable solutions.

This meticulous process ensures that the pieces are not only visually appealing but also structurally sound for years to come.

Following this, we explore creative possibilities, ranging from conservative finishes that modernise the piece to more adventurous modifications that add colour, texture, and new elements. This playful and versatile approach results in statement pieces that are both unique and characterful.

Our Approach To Manufacturing

Since the foundation of our company, we've restored hundreds of pieces, gaining insights that now guide our own manufacturing. This background in restoration allows us to understand how different materials and techniques age, helping us choose the best methods for constructing durable, long-lasting furniture. We exclusively use solid timber in our collections because it ages gracefully, simplifies repairs, and preserves both value and appearance over time. Every piece in the Attica Studios permanent collection is crafted from uniform, solid wood—buy an oak piece, and it’s solid oak through and through. Same goes for walnut.

We take pride in keeping our craftsmanship hands-on and authentic, with every piece turned and fitted by the skilled hands of our craftsmen using combination of the most effective traditional and modern joinery techniques. This approach not only infuses each piece with unique character but also supports artisans who have dedicated their lives to the craft.

By manufacturing all our pieces locally in the UK, right next to our office, we keep our creative team closely connected to each piece we produce. This proximity fosters innovation and ensures every design is both visionary and meticulously crafted. Our commitment not only supports the local community but also ensures that each piece is built to outlive us all, maintaining a standard that is higher or just as high as the antiques we restore, helping it preserve its value and telling its story through generations.

"When you're a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you're not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even though it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You'll know it's there, so you're going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back. For you to sleep well at night, the aesthetic, the quality, has to be carried all the way through." - Steve Jobs

  • Our Timber

Wood is one of the most sustainable resources available to us, as it grows naturally, contributes to habitats, and can be a renewable material when logged responsibly. The impact of the timber industry largely comes from transporting wood from distant forests and the emissions this process generates. That's why we use only locally-sourced timber, grown in responsibly managed British forests. We also love recycled timber for its stability—after hundreds of years, most of its movement has stabilized due to exposure to environmental factors. Using recycled timber not only makes the most of available resources but also promotes circularity in our industry. Overall, our deep appreciation for wood drives our careful selection and processing of each piece in our workshop, ensuring every item we build showcases the best of what this resource has to offer.

  • Our Stains

A lot of the identifiable features of our designs come from the stain we use to finish our pieces.

We use finishes that utilise modern technology, combining wood oils and waxes in the same compound. This creates beautiful surfaces with a natural finish that allows the grain to breathe and shine through for a very long time while offering outstanding durability.

Our oil bases are all supplied by environmentally friendly companies that produces these finishes using only renewable materials, making them fully organic and safe for humans and animals after curing.

The finishes you see on our pieces were all developed in-house and carefully curated to achieve a specific tone. To achieve this, we combine a multitude of techniques that are unique to our company and won’t be found anywhere else in the world. They are a big part of our identity and therefore are not available to anyone else.

  • Our Paints

You will often find paint accents in pieces we create, whether it's a fine line highlighting a scalloped edge or covering the entirety of surfaces on the inside or outside of a piece.

All our colors are produced by environmentally friendly paint companies that utilize the best available technology to create water-based paint with low harmful emissions and well-thought-out formulations.

These produce a very durable finish with a gorgeous sheen and a variety of different colors.
