19th Century Louis Philippe Walnut Burr Commode with Taj Mahal Quartzite Top

Louis Philippe commodes are a hallmark of nineteenth-century French furniture, celebrated for their generous proportions, elegant forms, and expressive burled fronts. This example stands out for the refinement of its craftsmanship: the walnut burr has been book-matched both vertically and horizontally, creating a pattern that is not only symmetrical but beautifully considered, with the effect continuing seamlessly onto the shaped sides. Equally remarkable is the hand-dovetailed back, an intelligent and uncommon construction detail that allows natural movement in the timber while preserving the integrity of the joints, ensuring both stability and longevity.

Our restoration focused on preserving and enhancing these qualities while addressing structural needs with care. The joints were reinforced throughout and the drawers carefully readjusted to ensure stability and perfect action. We replaced the back feet with new ones carved in solid French walnut, designed to echo the profile of the originals at the front, an adjustment that brought greater balance and cohesion to the overall silhouette. Precise repairs were made to the burr before the surface was refined to a satin finish that accentuates the depth of the grain. The piece was then completed with antique-inspired brass hardware chosen for authenticity and elegance, and crowned with a Taj Mahal quartzite top, its soft beige tones and gentle transparency contrasting with the walnut to bring lightness and refinement to the design.
