Behind The Initiative

From the very beginning, during the conception of Attica Studios, Joana and Ricardo drew invaluable inspiration and knowledge from The Wood Store. With guidance and advice from the charity’s founder, Rick, they made their first forays into developing wood tones, selecting timber, and forming partnerships that remain vital to this day. It was through countless hours spent sifting through their beautiful timber that the inspiration to use recycled and locally sourced materials in our products was born.

The Wood Store’s impact didn’t stop there—many of our talented apprentices got their first start through this organisation or were connected to its cause in some meaningful way. It has played a pivotal role not just in the woodworking community and environmental sustainability but also in shaping who we are as a studio.

When we learned they needed support to continue their vital work, we felt compelled to act. By sharing a part of the spotlight from the Santiago launch, we hope to give our clients the opportunity to join us in supporting this extraordinary cause that continues to inspire and uplift so many.

The Wood Store

The History Of The Charity

From this single project set up in 1998 founder Richard Mehmed created Community Wood Recycling, a nationwide network of wood recycling social enterprises carrying out commercial waste timber collections from places as diverse as HS2 and Eastenders and offering low-cost wood and beautiful handmade reclaimed timber products to local communities. The network has changed the lives of hundreds of vulnerable and excluded people including people who have been unable to work because of mental illness, victims of modern slavery, ex-offenders, people with learning difficulties and the long term unemployed.”
