A stunning 19th-century Louis Philippe French mahogany commode, this piece features a striking flamed mahogany veneer with a rare, symmetrical pattern flowing across its drawers.

Constructed on a solid oak substrate for durability, this piece rests gracefully on hand-carved feet and is adorned with a beautifully patinated set of solid brass knobs, along with an antique set of ornate brass escutcheons original to the piece.

Completing the design is a carefully chosen, honed white Calacatta marble slab, which enhances the warmth of the wood with its soft matte finish and subtle veining.

Description

Originating from the Louis Philippe period (1830–1848), this commode embodies the restrained elegance that defined furniture of the era. Moving away from the elaborate ornamentation of previous periods, Louis Philippe furniture prioritised gentle curves, clean lines, and high-quality materials. The emphasis on comfort and durability over decoration was in keeping with the values of the period, making pieces like this commode both timeless and versatile.

The commode’s flamed mahogany veneer, crafted from now-extinct Cuban mahogany, reveals rich, flame-like patterns transitioning from deep maroon to warm mahogany tones. This effect, achieved through meticulous book-matching, required the artisan’s skill to create perfect symmetry across the drawers. Such rare timber, coupled with precision in grain alignment, reflects the high standards of craftsmanship valued in the Louis Philippe era, making this piece a remarkable example of its time.

Our restoration focused on preserving the commode’s authenticity and historical character. Antique mahogany veneers were applied to repair areas of wear, blending seamlessly with the original wood. The solid oak substrate, originally constructed with hand-cut joinery, was reinforced with antique oak to ensure stability and maintain the piece’s integrity.

To complete the restoration and add a touch of contemporary flair, custom solid brass knobs were added, chosen for their compatibility with the commode’s period details. The Calacatta marble, cut precisely to the commode’s silhouette, features soft grey and brown veining that introduces a subtle contrast to the mahogany.
