About Us

Our Approach to Design & Making

Furniture with character made with intention, grounded in craft, and guided by the belief that what is made with care is made to keep.

Design Philosophy

Every design at Attica begins with the material. Before a form exists, we spend time with it, the grain of the timber, the pattern of marble, the irregularities that make each one unique. Our aim is always to honour that natural beauty and frame it in a way that feels timeless, restrained and full of intention. From there, craftsmanship and proportion take the lead, drawing on the heritage of traditional techniques that we have studied and reinterpreted in our own way. We use them not for ornament, but to add depth, honesty and individuality, small details that reveal how something was made and why it was made that way. We refine every design slowly, until it feels inevitable, as though it could not exist in any other way. What matters to us is creating furniture that feels distinctive and lasting, where material, craft and form come together in harmony, telling their story through the way they are made and continuing to do so for generations.

The Making Process

Our approach to making has been shaped by the lessons we learned through restoration, where we saw firsthand how thoughtful construction determines the life of a piece. Every design is made to order in small batches, allowing us to maintain that same level of care and precision while giving each piece the attention it deserves. This way of working also allows for bespoke sizing when needed, ensuring that the design adapts naturally to its space without losing proportion or integrity. Each piece is built by experienced craftspeople who use traditional joinery techniques refined through years of practice, combined with subtle modern methods that enhance accuracy and finish, while preserving the individuality of handwork. Sculptural elements are turned by hand in our workshop, shaped with balance and movement, so that every curve feels deliberate. Every joint, curve and surface is made with intention, tested for balance and strength, and completed with the understanding that it will one day be restored, not replaced.

Working with Solid Timber

Solid timber sits at the heart of everything we do. It is a living material that carries its own rhythm, story and quiet sense of permanence. We approach it with deep respect, knowing that every board is unique, with its own grain, tone and movement, and that individuality is what gives each Attica piece its character. Our founders still visit local timber yards to hand select the logs that will become our furniture, studying each board before assigning it to its role within a piece. In the workshop, every panel, joint and surface is constructed with precision, with the grain of each element carefully aligned so that it flows naturally across the form. We choose to work only with solid timber because it allows for honesty in construction, durability through time and the ability to be repaired rather than replaced. It can be refinished, restored or reworked without losing its essence, allowing each piece to grow more beautiful and meaningful with time. For us, it is both the foundation of our work and the material through which our values are most clearly expressed.

Developing Our Finishes

Our finishes are the final dialogue between material and maker, the stage where all the patience of the process comes to life. Each finish we use has been developed in-house through years of experimentation, refining combinations of natural pigments, oils and waxes that echo the tones found in nature until we found hues that feel balanced, timeless and true to the wood. Every piece is hand finished, layer by layer, to bring out the natural depth of the grain rather than conceal it, allowing the timber to remain the central voice of the design. We work with sustainable suppliers whose materials are made from renewable, plant based sources and carry the lowest possible emissions. In the workshop, the finishing process is meticulous: every surface is sanded, stained, sealed and waxed by hand, with each coat carefully matched so that the tone remains consistent across the piece. The result is a surface that feels alive, protected, tactile and enduring, where the beauty of the timber and the care of the craft meet in harmony.
